Accessibility Ramp Grand Opening
We are very excited that Phase One of the Dining Hall Accessibility Project Is finally complete! To mark the occasion, a ribbon Cutting ceremony took place on December 5th. Thank you to guest of honor Geoff Solomon, a tireless advocate for accessibility and a member of Meaford Community Foundation, for cutting the ribbon and officially opening the ramp.
Harmony Centre was very pleased to have His Worship, Mayor Ian Boddy on hand to provide remarks on behalf of the City of Owen Sound, and a congratulatory message was read on behalf of MP Larry Miller. Colleen Trask Seaman of OSHaRE spoke about the positive effect the completion of the accessibility ramp will have on soup kitchen operations, and Leigh Greaves thanked G.M.Diemert Architect Inc. and contractor Gary Schmidt of JA/LAND 2005 Ltd. for their exceptional work on this project.
We are grateful to the Community Foundation Grey Bruce - Capital Fund - for a grant of $25,000. The Community Foundation has helped fund a number of projects at Harmony Centre, and we appreciate having them as a supportive partner as we grow this community centre.
The Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund provided us with a grant of $49,000 – without this substantial funding this project would not have been accomplished so quickly, and we are very grateful for this support.
Harmony centre’s mission is to preserve this historic building for the use of this community to share, create, educate, and perform. The addition of this ramp has just opened up the possibility for all of those things to happen, in this space, for a whole group of people who were previously excluded.
Now - on to Phase Two - Accessible Washrooms for the Dining Hall level!
Ribbon Cutting with Leigh Graves (Chair, Board of Directors Harmony Centre), Guest of Honor Mr. Geoff Solomon (Meaford Community Foundation) and Mayor Ian Boddy.
